Bi-parting cantilever gates for an airport perimeter in the Maldives

The challenge

An international airport in the Maldives needed a 22 m clear opening for special equipment and oversized vehicles. The site sits in a tropical marine climate with high salinity and humidity, so corrosion resistance was a hard requirement.

Airport security also set strict limits on opening time. A single leaf long enough for 22 m would have taken too long to open during peak periods.

Our solution

Our engineering team replaced the single leaf with a bi-parting system: two leaves with 11 m clear opening each and 16.5 m total length per side.

The leaves use 6005-T6 high-strength aluminum with AkzoNobel industrial anti-corrosion coating and a double cure. The 7.0 mm bottom beam and precision balancing keep the leading edge level with zero sag, and an integrated controller runs both leaves in sync with an infrared safety array.
